Holter monitoring is a basic, noninvasive tool used to evaluate and manage cardiac symptoms. The monitor continuously records the patient’s cardiac rhythm for 24 to 48 hours. The data is then sent to the Ambulatory Monitoring Services office, usually via express courier, where it is analyzed. A report is typically returned to the ordering physician within 24 to 48 hours after the patient’s data is received by AMS. This tool is used to evaluate transient cardiac-related symptoms. The unit continuously monitors the patient’s heartbeat with looping memory. In the event of a symptom, the patient presses a button to record an electrocardiogram (ECG) while the symptom is occurring. Once the recording is complete, the patient calls the Ambulatory Monitoring Services receiving center to transmit the recording over the telephone.
